‘Something about an old-fashioned Christmas is hard to forget.’ – Hugh Downs
One thing we lack in South Africa is holiday tradition that remains in the family for years. Something that hasn’t been changed to suit the times, something that remains exactly the same, passed down each generation.
Americans are known for following tradition and passing it on to their children, letting it go on for years and years. The Christmas season here, however difficult it was being away from my family for the first time, it was such a great experience. Going out to find the perfect Christmas tree, putting up lights and decorating the tree.
One of the traditions my host family has is baking cookies with the grand kids and grandma Donna (Carlene’s mom). They do it every year around Christmas, they have early gift exchanges so that people who don’t live close by can get to experience the Christmas festivities with their family.
Christmas here is a sight to see, something that should definitely be on your bucket list: experience Christmas in America – and if you’ve never experienced a cold Christmas, it somehow makes it really enjoyable.
I do hope Santa is able to find me this year.
