“One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years.”
― Tom Wolfe
Waking up this morning was extremely confusing, it took me about 30 seconds to fully comprehend why there were two other beds occupied in my hotel room and why I was in a hotel room at all.
A full day in New York, I was beyond excited. For 10 hours we were given basic childcare training, bear in mind that I am one of about 200 girls. All of which are from different parts of the world, who speak a different language, barely speak English and because of how our society works, cliques had formed, every girl in her own country. It was basically high school.
From American culture to forms of discipline, even down to an all American lunch. We covered it all but that wasn’t what any of us were most excited about. Tonight we will get acquainted with the city and all her glory.
After a few hours of wandering the city I noticed that New Yorkers are brilliant dancers, as the city sways to a rhythm of her own and each person moves to her song, back and forth on a continuous loop. I was a diminutive part of this performance. My dad is in love with New York City, he spent a few weeks here and his favorite song became Empire State Of Mind, that was the song playing in my head as I scuffled through the crowd, swinging my head to every corner.
Finally, I understood the lyrics of Empire State Of Mind, I did indeed feel inspired by all the lights, I wanted to do something more in life than to just be another one out of the hundred tourists standing around me.
New Yorkers must not believe in sleep. Times Square at 10 PM looks nothing like Benoni at 10 PM.
What a pleasure it was to indulge in this chaos known as New York City.
